ON THIS DAY IN 1885, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle said, “Is it a spirit of gain, or a relish for the freedom of life on the wild Dakota plains, or both of these with something else added that reconciles the Hon. ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt to a cowboy’s career? Hear what the Denver Republican has to impart: ‘It is said that Theodore Roosevelt has an eye on the politics of Dakota. Dakota is a rapidly growing commonwealth, and Roosevelt is a rapidly growing young man, politically. He has an immense fortune, and he has already acquired considerable influence in New York. But he may conclude that his political ambition would be best served by a removal to Dakota. He has been in that Territory, and he is not unacquainted with its resources. If he were to conclude to remove there he could doubtless soon secure a leading if not a controlling position politically, and this rumor regarding him may therefore not be without foundation.’ It seems to us that a seat in the Senate of the United States as the representative of that spirited Commonwealth would be more congenial to the fledgling statesman than any political prize he would be likely to win in the rude conflicts of the metropolitan area. But the Constitution requires a Senator to be at least thirty years old, and ‘Teddy’ hasn’t cut his wisdom teeth yet.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1908, the Eagle reported, “LONDON, SEPT. 12 — Winston Spencer Churchill, president of the Board of Trade, was married in this city this afternoon to Clementine, daughter of the late Sir Henry Montague Hozier, who for thirty-two years was secretary for Lloyds. The ceremony occurred at St. Margaret’s Church, the little edifice which stands in the shadow of Westminster Abbey, where so many fashionable weddings have taken place. After the marriage of Miss Jean Reid, daughter of the American ambassador to Great Britain, to the Hon. John Ward, equerry-in-waiting to his majesty the King in June of this year, the wedding of today attracted more attention than any held this season, and there have been many, particularly because of the social and political prominence of Mr. Churchill, who is one of the most discussed men in the United Kingdom … Later in the afternoon the couple took a train for Blenheim Palace. After the visit there they will go to Berlin until the opening of Parliament.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1929, the Eagle reported, “TETERBORO AIRPORT, HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. — With consummate scorn of superstition, 13 passengers soared aloft here today, Friday the 13th, in the first test flights of the largest landplane in the world, the 32-passenger Fokker, F-32, and came to earth safely. The huge silver monoplane, measuring almost a half block from wing tip to wing tip, took off from a soggy field this morning at 11:45 o’clock with Sir Hubert Wilkins and a number of other notables aboard, and soared for 15 minutes over the field at an altitude of 800 feet. The ship attained a speed of 140 miles per hour. Low-hanging clouds prevented her from attaining greater altitude.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1952, the Eagle reported, “The football Giants will unveil their new look backfield, featuring Fred Benners, Frank Gifford, Eddie Price and Kyle Rote, against the world champion Los Angeles Rams in the Polo Grounds next Thursday night (Sept. 18). This will be the only floodlit game here this season, and the lone appearance of the Giants at home until they open their championship schedule Oct. 19. Steve Owen, coach, states that Benners, spectacular rookie passer from Southern Methodist, has acquired such finesse in the T formation that he will share the field general role with Charlie Conerly, record-holding veteran.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Eagle reported, “MILWAUKEE, SEPT. 12 — The Brooklyn Dodgers, who have made new individual and team records all season, made more baseball history in the chilled County Stadium here today by becoming the earliest National League pennant winners ever. Besides, Manager Charley Dressen’s ‘window-breakers’ won the league flag for the second year in succession — and that trick hadn’t been performed by a Brooklyn team in modern baseball annals. Nor had any National League team won the pennant twice in succession since the St. Louis Cardinals did it in 1943. By winning its 98th contest of the current campaign, 5 to 2, against the second-place Milwaukee Braves, this club became the first pennant-winning Dodger outfit to wrap up its flag in the West. As Carl Erskine flung his 19th win of the season, the Dodgers clinched their seventh pennant since they began playing in Ebbets Field in 1913. Previous pennants were captured in 1916, 1920, 1941, 1947, 1949 and last year.”
