Peculiar Brooklyn romance featured in upcoming British romance drama
BROOKLYN — AN UPCOMING FILM DISPLAYING A UNIQUE romance between the son of a Russian oligarch and a Brooklyn sex worker is coming to theaters soon. Sean Baker’s “Anora” — the name of the main character, portrayed by actress Mickey Madison — is set to release Nov. 1 in the U.K. The film’s trailer highlights Brooklyn at night: a city of bright lights contrasted by a backdrop of Gotham grit.
Mikey Madison’s characteristic Brooklyn accent in the trailer makes her not only local, but touches on an unforeseen side of Brooklyn youth with an elegant touch. The plot follows the main characters in an impulsive wedding in Las Vegas, after which Anora and Ivan face conflict when disapproving parents try to annul the speedy marriage. Described as a blend of “Euphoria” and “Pretty Woman,” the film features Baker’s signature mix of emotion and cultural commentary.
Anora received rave reviews at Cannes, including a Palme d’Or win and a standing ovation. Baker’s film “The Florida Project” is widely renowned, epitomizing his view of Americana which perhaps crosses over into the more urban and polar setting of the Brooklyn borough.
