SEATTLE — Voting — a practice of voice: The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ members count votes on a contract offer by airplane maker Boeing on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, in Seattle. However, the union members voted 96% to strike, which they did just after midnight/early Friday. The Machinists’ 94.6% vote to reject Boeing’s contract is the latest in a series of blows to the aerospace giant, which has suffered financial losses and a tarnishment of its safety reputation after its planes developed serious problems earlier this year, including one where a doorstop blew out during takeoff.
The contract would have given 25% wage increases over four years, but the machinists are angry about wages that had stagnated in recent years and about concessions they had to make to keep Boeing in their city.
