Gounardes: Driver who ran down 74-year-old in Bay Ridge ‘needs to be apprehended’
BAY RIDGE — THE HIT-AND-RUN driver who ran down a 74-year-old man crossing a Bay Ridge street on Wednesday, Sept. 11, “needs to be apprehended and prosecuted,” state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, who represents the area, wrote on X/Twitter Thursday. Police said they responded to a 911 call just before 9 p.m. and found Segundo Reina-Gaon, a resident of 52nd Street, lying in the roadway at the intersection of Ridge Boulevard and Bay Ridge Avenue. He was pronounced deceased at NYU Langone Hospital/Brooklyn. According to NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad, Reina-Gaon had been crossing Ridge Boulevard from west to east when he was struck by a white SUV traveling northbound. The SUV left the scene without stopping.
Gounardes said he had been discussing safety concerns with DOT one block from the site just two days ago. “We will continue to work with DOT to make this intersection — and Ridge Boulevard — safer,” he wrote. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
