AI-generated information under scrutiny amid voters’ mistrust of this technology
NATIONWIDE — A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS DISTRUST ARTIFICIAL INTELLGENCE’S ABILITY to deliver accurate information on search engine results or chatbots, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts. Poll results showed that about two-thirds of adults say that AI-generated answers are unreliable, fail to provide factual information or sometimes fail to answer the question asked, in particular regarding the current election season. Election officials and AI researchers at a conference earlier this year determined that AI tools performed poorly even on basic questions, such as locating one’s nearest polling place. Secretaries of state in several parts of the U.S. also warned that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) chatbox had spread fake election information.
Fears and accusations of inaccurate or intentionally-generated fake information also rose after AI-generated calls impersonating President Joe Biden’s voice attempted to persuade New Hampshire voters to skip their state’s primary election back in January.
