CITY HALL — RANDY MASTRO, Mayor Eric Adams’ nominee for NYC corporation counsel, told Adams in a letter on Tuesday that he is backing out to avoid facing an expected rejection from the City Council, City and State NY reported Tuesday. Allies of Mastro and the mayor were upset at the questions the Council threw at Mastro during last month’s hearing, including his prior service under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a large number of controversial clients over the years, City and State said.

Mastro’s  withdrawal letter “demonstrates why so many lacked trust that he would be a suitable lawyer for all city officials, rather than just for the mayor,” City Council spokesperson Julia Agos said in a statement Tuesday. “New York City needs a top attorney who is independent and willing to stand up when the political interests of an administration conflict with the public interests of New Yorkers. Given the challenges raised about his nomination far in advance, it should have been no surprise that his record would be heavily scrutinized at a lengthy hearing.”
