WASHINGTON — An unforgettable monument: Flowers and a flag adorn one of the memorial benches outside the Pentagon before the start of a dawn 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, in Washington.
Even though their offices are in the nation’s capital, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were both present at the 9/11 ceremonies in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday. They also visited and laid a wreath at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the fourth plane went down after its passengers accosted the hijackers.
PHILADELPHIA — Meeting for the first time in person, it’s a shame they didn’t fall in love: Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris could have easily sung the 1965 Cher/Sonny Bono hit, ‘I Got You, Babe.’ But they chose instead to shake hands before the start of an ABC News presidential debate at the National Constitution Center on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, in Philadelphia. The debate became combative, and some viewers have said that Harris’ and Trump’s facial and nonverbal expressions told more than what the candidates actually said. Harris focused on forward-thinking plans to help middle-class Americans, while Trump repeatedly attacked immigrants, accusing them of criminality, even when the moderators had asked questions unrelated to that matter.
After the event, at least one high-ranking Republican, Senator John Thune of South Dakota, said that Trump and Harris should debate again, although the GOP candidate does not know if he will.
SEATTLE — Note to Kamala and Donald — everybody cares: Drag queen Miss Texas 1988, who did not wish to give her real name, prepares to host a watch party at queer nightclub Massive for the debate between Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, in Seattle. The fundraiser, dubbed ‘Drag the Debate,’ according to its website, was being billed as “a fierce night of fun, drinks, and drama!”
Proceeds from the $20 cover were being applied to a fund for those with illnesses.
PHILADELPHIA — The former prosecutor’s training gave power to the words, but her body language said it all: Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris gestures as she speaks during a presidential debate with Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump at the National Constitution Center, Tuesday, Sept.10, 2024, in Philadelphia. ABC’s moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, came across as more aggressive in fact-checking Trump than their counterparts had in a June debate between Trump and President Biden, who ended his reelection campaign as a result of his own performance. Muir and Davis held both debaters accountable for keeping their answers on point.
Many expected Harris to be prosecutorial in her approach. She netted an endorsement from top singer-songwriter and activist Taylor Swift shortly after the debate concluded.
NIGERIA — Nature’s revenge — stop polluting or keep building bigger dams: Houses are partially submerged following a dam collapse in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024. The Alau dam in the Nigerian state of Borno collapsed, causing some of the worst flooding there in 30 years, when the same dam collapsed almost to the day on Sept. 13, 1994.
Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettina, in Maiduguri to inspect the flooded region, assured residents that President Tinubu’s administration will be prioritizing the flood victims and the needs of their communities, according to Arise, a global news network that focuses on Africa.

Colombia eliminated Argentina in the qualifiers. A key player for Argentina, Lionel Messi, was on the injured list.
However, the teams could wind up regaining a place in wildcard matches. The United States, Canada and Mexico will be co-hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026.
MEXICO CITY — Jan. 6 definitely encouraged more invasions of government inner sanctums: Protesters attempt to break into a room in the Senate as lawmakers weigh the government’s proposed judicial reform, which would make judges stand for election, in Mexico City, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024. Hundreds of the protesters pushed their way into the Senate on Tuesday, interrupting a session after outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s governing party, Morena, had secured the necessary votes to pass the proposal.
Mexico’s Senate ultimately did vote early Wednesday to overhaul the country’s judiciary, eliminating an obstacle to controversial constitutional revision that would require all judges to stand for election.
Critics fear that policy would compromise the independence of Mexico’s judiciary branch and threaten the nation’s democracy.
