Brooklyn Public Library unveils second phase of Central Library upgrades
GRAND ARMY PLAZA — BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY unveiled renderings and details of phase two of its $150 million upgrade of the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza. BPL engaged renowned architect Toshiko Mori to restore the building to its original grandeur and transform it into a more flexible, modern facility, the library said in a release on Sept. 5.
Key features include an updated Adult Learning Center, a new Teen Center, restored collection areas and renovated Children’s Center. BPL’s system-wide data center will be upgraded, and the Trustees Rooms, exterior facades and roof will be restored. The work will be carried out in stages and is expected to be complete by 2027. The current phase has a budget of $95 million, supported by city and state funding as well as private donations raised through the ongoing capital campaign.
State Assemblymember Robert Carroll represents the Park Slope and Prospect Heights neighborhood adjacent to the library. “This work will make the library an even more accessible, welcoming, and dynamic place that will serve to enrich the lives of members of the community and all Brooklynites for years to come,” he said in a release.
