Sinkhole causes damage to unlucky residents’ vehicles
BATH BEACH — A DRAMATIC RESCUE MOMENT ENSUED from the water main break and resulting sinkhole in Bath Beach early Monday morning. ABC7 EyeWitness News reported that after one of the cars parked along Bay 37th St. near Cropsey Ave. became partially submerged in the sinkhole as the street turned into what witnesses called “a river.” The boyfriend of the car’s owner, Vicenza Maligieri, wound up also sinking into the hole and she had to rescue him as they both tried to pull the car out. The radio station 1010 WINS reported that the view from the sidewalk made the street appear stable despite the hidden chasm underneath the water that caused the man to slip all the way up to his lower stomach.
Ms. Maligieri told ABC7 News and other reporters on the scene on Monday, “I don’t know the next step,” “I’m waiting for nine o’clock for Allstate to open; the police left, the firemen left, DOT, emergency — nobody could pull it out.” Some news reports indicated that the Jeep SUV was eventually rescued.
