PAKISTAN — Oral polio vaccine (OPV) administered: A health worker administers a polio vaccine to a child at a school in Peshawar, Pakistan, Monday, Sept. 9, 2024. After Dr. Jonas Salk had, during the 1950s, developed an intravenous vaccine for polio using a dead virus, microbiologist Albert Sabin also developed an oral vaccine using an inactivated but live vaccine, which was administered in the form of a sweetened liquid or sugar cube. Because of this, the oral vaccine was deemed more suitable for children and was administered widely.
Although still used in many parts of the world, the oral vaccine was discontinued in the United States in 2000 after it caused accidental paralysis in people who had received it.

Being landlocked by its neighbors Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina, Paraguay has no direct source to the Pacific Ocean — unlike Uruguay, which sits to the northeast of Buenos Aires.

Nearly half (600,000) of East Timor’s population attended the service at the cathedral, whose construction was completed in 1989 and played a key role in the nation’s fight for independence from Indonesia. Pope John Paul II dedicated the cathedral upon its completion.

A 2007 agreement between Egypt and Israel stipulates that while Egypt controls the crossing, imports through the Rafah crossing require Israeli approval.
In May, Israeli military forces seized the crossing, angering Egypt, which had been a mediator in negotiations to end the Israel-Hamas War, now approaching its first anniversary.
MUMBAI — If this is the size of the hand, imagine the size of the elephant head: An artist works on an idol of the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesha inside a workshop ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Mumbai, India, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. It is the custom of the devotees during the 10-day festival to sing hymns glorifying the deity, who is believed to be the remover of obstacles and the granter of wishes. People whisper their wishes in Lord Ganesha’s ear and present him offerings of his favorite sweets made with coconut and modak — a sweet, steamed dumpling that is popular in Indian cuisine.
During the festival’s conclusion, Ganesha’s devotees will immerse the statue into the sea, from which they believe he ascends to the heavens, having heard their wishes.

The new school year inaugurates a new student statute and a new school regulation after the Eastern European nation adopted its Education Law last year. Student feedback was incorporated into reforms. Special detention rooms were established for students who disrupt their classes, and oral exams are now part of the baccalaureate degree program.
Another longtime practice will be banned starting with the 2025-26 school year: holding the school day in three shifts. Although some schools have already abandoned that policy, it is still in effect in 19 Romanian schools, reports Romanian-Insider.com.
