Bichotte Hermelyn disgusted by JD Vance’s claim that Haitian immigrants kidnap and eat pets
FLATBUSH — ‘DISGUSTING,’ ‘ABSURD’ AND ‘DANGEROUS’ are some of the terms Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn used to describe GOP Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance’s bizarre claim that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are eating neighbors’ pets. “The disgusting and xenophobic false news being spread online attacking Haitian immigrants is once again being amplified and legitimized by Trump’s campaign, in a pathetic attempt to turn the American people against Haitians and advance inhumane mass deportation policies,” Bichotte Hermelyn, who represents a large Haitian community, said in a release Tuesday. Bichotte Hermelyn called for X to take down Vance’s posts about Haitians which claimed that “people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.”
Donald Trump has spoken of immigrants as criminals and mentally ill people who are “poisoning the blood of our country,” echoing rhetoric once used by Adolf Hitler, according to AP. Yet extensive research has found that immigrant communities across the country are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans, NPR reports.
