People forced by NYPD to remove religious head covering could get settlement
CITYWIDE — IF THE NYPD forced someone to remove a religious head covering for a post-arrest photograph, they could get $7,824 or more from a class action settlement, Councilmember Shahana Hanif (D-39) said in her newsletter on Sunday. The lawsuit Clark v. City of New York claimed the city violated the law when it forced people to remove their religious head coverings for mug shots during an arrest. Individuals eligible for the payment were photographed while in custody of the Police Department from March 16, 2014, to Aug. 23, 2021. The class-action lawsuit was filed by two Muslim women who said they felt shamed when they were forced to remove their hijabs after they were arrested, NY1 reported.
