Assemblymember responds to water main break, sinkhole
BATH BEACH — RESIDENTS OF BAY 37TH ST. AND CROPSEY AVE. received a visit from Assemblymember William Colton, who responded to the predawn water main break at this intersection. Colton spoke with workers there who informed him that the water would be on by 3 p.m. Repairs are ongoing till Friday. In the meantime, the Department of Environmental Protection installed two portable faucet setups on the sidewalk so residents have access to water. “It’s good that the city responded quickly to this emergency situation,” said Colton. “The infrastructure in the area is a century old, and is likely increasingly fragile.” Colton said the city needs to conduct an evaluation of the state of the water mains and replace those that could potentially cause problems.
The broken main caused flooding and a sinkhole into which submerged a vehicle. When a local merchant and his girlfriend tried to free the car, he fell in but was rescued, reported Eyewitness News ABC7 and CBS.
