Earlier in the day, Pope Francis visited the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, remarking that 20th-century Indonesian architect Friedrich Silaban (1912-1984), who designed that center of worship, was a Christian, and he used a synonym to enter the contest that awarded him the opportunity. He also designed other mosques in Indonesia.
GEORGIA — The story of a tragedy continues to unfold: Colin Gray, 54, the father of Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray, 14, enters the Barrow County courthouse for his first appearance on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, in Winder, GA. The elder Gray, who was arrested for allowing his son to have a weapon, remains in custody after their lawyers decided not to seek bail. Colt Gray has been charged with four counts of murder and is accused of using a semiautomatic assault-style rifle to kill two fellow students and two teachers. Colin Gray, the father, faces related charges as prosecutors are starting to hold parents responsible for their children’s actions in school shootings.
The maximum sentence that Colt, as a juvenile, could receive would be life imprisonment without parole. A judge who originally said Colt could receive the death penalty had to call the defendant back into his courtroom to issue a statement correcting that.

Many are hoping it will be an improvement over the surface field problems experienced at the Copa America earlier this year. In that case, a grassy field had replaced artificial turf. The replacement proved to be unstable.
PARIS — Head in the game, eyes on the ball: Norway’s Aida Husic Dahlen competes against Germany’s Juliane Wolf in the Women’s Singles – WS8 – Semifinal at the 2024 Paralympics, on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, in Paris, France. Born in Bosnia-Herzegovina before the start of the 1992 Bosnian war, Husic Dahlen was adopted by a Norwegian family when she was six. She was born without a left forearm and had to undergo an under-knee amputation of her left leg. Encouraged as a youth to play table tennis, Dahlen became a two-time Paralympic bronze medallist, two-time World Championships silver and bronze medallist, and four-time European champion.
Dahlen won the Women’s Singles Class 8 semifinal match on Friday 3-0, with sets of 11-2, 11-8 and 11-8.

FLUSHING MEADOWS — The look of hitting it with your best shot: Aryna Sabalenka, of Belarus, returns a shot to Emma Navarro of the United States during the women’s singles semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, in New York. Sabalenka won that match, 6-3, and will play against Jessica Pegula of the United States in Saturday’s final.
Sabalenka, now 26, is a former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles by the Women’s Tennis Association. Pegula’s career-high singles rankings include world No. 3, which she achieved in October 2022, and in doubles of world No. 1, achieved in September 2023. Pegula turned 30 in February.
