CROWN HEIGHTS — THE VOLUNTEER NEIGHBORHOOD PATROL CROWN HEIGHTS SHOMRIM is warning the Jewish community of Crown Heights to be on alert regarding a common email scam. The scam involves sending threatening emails that demand money and include unnerving personal details — such as a picture of the recipient’s home in some cases. The scammers exploit ominous scare tactics, sometimes mining their victims’ usernames or passwords. While these emails can appear frightening, they are scams designed to intimidate victims into paying and are often generated from outside the North American continent.  Shomrim advises anyone receiving such emails to file a police report and change their passwords immediately, emphasizing that the emails are fraudulent and should not be taken seriously.

Crown Heights Shomrim is a neighborhood patrol organization made up entirely of volunteers whose mission is to help protect the streets of Crown Heights and to give aid to crime victims in a neighborhood where Orthodox Hasidic Jews of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement live and work alongside a major Caribbean and African-American population.
