Former Hochul staffer pleads not guilty to charges of foreign agency, fraud and smuggling
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A former NY State official and her husband pleaded “not guilty” in Brooklyn federal court late on Tuesday against charges that they were working as undisclosed secret agents for the People’s Republic of China and its Communist Party. Linda Sun, who at one time had worked as Gov. Kathy Hochul’s deputy chief of staff, and Sun’s husband, Chris Hu, were arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and charged with violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling and money laundering conspiracy. Ahead of a Sept. 25 status conference with Judge Cogan presiding, Ms. Sun is being released on a $1.5 million bond and Mr. Hu is being released on a $500,000 bond. Sun is enjoined from having any contact with the consulate and mission of the People’s Republic of China.
