What They’re Saying: live arts in Brooklyn this week, Sept. 3
John Roseboro @ Elsewhere
Music, Concerts, Post-Bossa Nova
Elsewhere Rooftop, 599 Johnson Ave, East Williamsburg
Wednesday, Sept. 4 @ 7 p.m.
Elsewhere Rooftop is hosting up-and-coming artists John Roseboro and Mei Semones this Wednesday from 7-10 p.m.
John Roseboro, an indie singer-songwriter and visual artist from Brooklyn, brings his unique post-Bossa style to the stage, blending personal and social themes with influences from João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. His music has been described as “probably the music that will heal the world… impossible to be indifferent, in voice and soul.”
Opening the evening, Mei Semones will perform her jazz-influenced indie pop, featuring lyrics in both Japanese and English.
“It wouldn’t be a leap to say John Roseboro’s music has an inherent healing quality. Maybe it’s his velvety vocals. His soft, mesmerizing finger-picking. His ability to address the deepest throws of grief through earnest lyricism brimming with childlike wonder and a cheeky sense of humor (for starters, check out “I Took The L” and “Topo Chico”).” — Colin Kirkland, Brooklyn Magazine
“Known for his buttery voice and distinct strumming, singer-songwriter and visual artist John Roseboro has been making a name for himself in the indie scene, redefining and innovating the genre from Brooklyn, NY.” — Chicago Reader

“This beautiful, expansive bar with a classic tin ceiling and cozy wrap around leather booths is especially great for going out with large groups during the warmer months. Talon Bar’s awesome courtyard, an uncommon accommodation in the Buswhick bat scene aesthetic, is great for throwing back one or several drinks until 4 a.m. with your buddies.” — Cristin Noonan, Bushwick Daily
“A Stanford grad and tech worker by day, [James] Mwaura shares his relatable stories and hilarious observations around Bay Area comedy and open mic nights.” – Jenna Wohlwend, 7×7.com
“Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Marty Cunnie grew up with a large Irish Italian family, which meant trading insults with uncles, aunts, and cousins on a regular basis since he could speak. The results of years of this brutal training resulted in a comedian with a love for raucous, bawdy humor who brings energy to every crowd he performs for.” — MartieCunnieComedy.com
