MONGOLIA — Presidents needing protection meet in secure inner sanctum: Russian President Vladimir Putin, center left, and Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh attend their meeting at the Saaral Ordon Government Building in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024. An international warrant for Putin’s arrest — for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine — had been issued, but many European leaders and diplomats feared (accurately, as it turned out) that Mongolia, also a member of the International Court, would ignore the order, the Associated Press reports. Mongolia had a strong alliance with the Soviet Union until the latter’s collapse in 1991.

Since then, the landlocked Asian nation has sought to build relationships with the Union States, Japan and other new allies but remains largely dependent on its neighbors — Russia and China.

PHILIPPINES — Nature’s revenge — search for missing neighbors after landslide: Volunteers and rescuers move debris as they search for bodies of missing residents believed to be buried under a landslide caused by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Yagi — locally called Enteng — that swept their homes in San Luis village, Antipolo City, Rizal province, in the northern Philippines on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024. The storm and landslides left at least 14 people dead, prompting authorities to suspend school classes and government work in the densely populated capital region. The storm set off landslides and unleashed pounding rains that flooded many northern Philippine areas overnight Sunday into Monday. Some areas received siren warnings to evacuate.

The Philippines are among the world’s most disaster-prone areas, and the archipelago lies in the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a region along most of the Pacific Ocean rim where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur, according to the Associated Press. Moreover, the Philippines must cope with an annual average of about 20 typhoons and storms.

JAKARTA — With wheelchair providing newfound alacrity, in country with world’s largest Muslim population, Pope hangs onto his headgear: Pope Francis is welcomed by Indonesia’s Minister for Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, center, soon after landing at Jakarta’s International airport Soekarno Hatta, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024. Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday at the start of the longest trip of his pontificate, hoping to encourage its Catholic community and celebrate the tradition of interfaith harmony in a country with the world’s largest Muslim population.

Although the Indonesian government officially recognizes six faiths — Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism — and adopted some measures to protect religious freedom — like forbidding schools to mandate hijabs — some more conservative Muslim groups who feel marginalized have created tensions in their efforts to change that balance.
