BOROUGHWIDE — THE HOUSING CRISIS REACHED THE ANIMAL POPULATION OF BROOKLYN, according to recent reporting, and adoption rates are insufficient in helping the animals find their forever home. The city’s largest shelter, Animal Care Centers of New York, saw a 33% increase in animals this year compared to 2021. Households with lower salaries were also found to struggle more with the increased costs, including veterinary fees, in keeping pets. High veterinary costs and housing issues in particular are cited as primary reasons for pet surrenders. Advocates are pushing for increased financial and other resources to help both pets and their owners stay together.

“The financial pressures that lead people to surrender their pets are the same ones preventing potential adopters from adding a pet into their home,” said the ACC in a recent newsletter. According to Marketwatch, the average vet appointment costs owners approximately $84.
