Crown Heights man fatally shot just a half block from his home

CROWN HEIGHTS — A 37-YEAR-OLD MAN was fatally shot by an unknown assailant a half block from his home in Crown Heights on Sunday morning, Sept. 1. Police said they responded to a 911 call at about 8:11 a.m. of a person shot in the vicinity of St. Johns Place and Troy Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were told that Donnell Thomas, a resident of St. John’s Place, was shot in the chest by an unidentified person, who then fled.  According to the Daily News, Thomas was transported by neighbors to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings Country, where he was pronounced deceased.  There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

The 77th Precinct, which covers the area, has seen an increase in murders and shootings this year, with a 28.6% rise in shooting incidents compared to last year, according to CompStat report for the week of Aug. 19-25. On Monday, five people were shot during the West Indian Day Parade in the vicinity of Eastern Parkway, which is the boundary between the 77th and 71st precincts.
