Chestnut sets new record vs. Kobayashi in Netflix hot dog contest
LAS VEGAS — SIXTEEN-TIME NATHAN’S HOT Dog Eating Competition champion Joey Chestnut set a new world record of an astonishing 83 hot dogs eaten in ten minutes on Monday versus his longtime nemesis, six-time Nathan’s champ Takeru Kobayashi, at Netflix’s “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” Labor Day special, breaking his own previous 2021 world record of 76, reports ScreenRant. Kobayashi also set a personal record of 66 during the electric contest, where both men shoved down dog after dog in front of a cheering crowd at the Luxor casino in Las Vegas. Both competitors out-ate this year’s Nathan’s winner, Patrick Bertoletti, who managed just 56 dogs on July 4, despite the Vegas contest banning the common practice of dunking the hot dog buns in water, which makes them easier to swallow quickly.
Netflix organized the showdown of rivals following the shock news that Chestnut had been banned from the Coney Island contest after a sponsorship dispute over his endorsement of vegan brand Impossible Foods — joining Kobayashi, who was banned in 2009 over a similar dispute; despite encouragement from figures including Mayor Adams, Nathan’s was unable to resolve the beef by July, leading Chestnut to compete with a group of soldiers in a charity match in Texas.
“I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years. Without Kobayashi, I was never able to do it. He drives me. We weren’t always nice to each other, but I love what he can do. We push each other to be our best,” Chestnut said after the match.
