PARAGUAY — Toys come in all forms to a child’s imagination: Manjui Indigenous children play in the Abisai community in Mariscal Estigarribia, in the western region of Paraguay known as the Paraguayan Chaco, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024. The landlocked South American country has been called the Country of Women as a consequence of the large number of male casualties during the Triple Alliance War (1864-70) that began around the time of the U.S. Civil War. Paraguay lost a war against a powerful alliance of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. The skewed gender ratio has contributed to more female-headed households and more out-of-wedlock births.

Car tires are used as toys in Paraguay and many other parts of the world, particularly as swings and other playground equipment. They have also been used to create arches or tunnels in electric model train sets.

A particularly aggressive and fierce sport, wheelchair rugby earned the moniker “murderball.” Athletes with quadriplegia developed wheelchair rugby in Canada during the 1970s. It was presented as a demonstration sport at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games and officially debuted as a medal sport at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. Paralympics are always held in the same city as the Summer Olympics.

Wheelchair rugby, with co-ed teams, is now played in more than 25 countries.

SEOUL — Not quite like hitting a pothole: A vehicle that fell into a sinkhole is seen on a street in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. Two elderly occupants in the car survived but with injuries, according to emergency workers. The pavement collapsed unexpectedly into the eight-foot-deep sinkhole, swallowing the SUV and injuring an 82-year-old male driver and 76-year-old female passenger. There were no other injuries.

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport warned lawmakers last year that at least 879 sinkholes were reported in the country from 2019 to June 2023, nearly half of them the result of damaged sewer pipes, reports the Associated Press.

GREECE — Nature’s revenge — the water loses life, while humanity loses sustenance: Workers collect more than 100 tons of dead fish from a river near the port city of Volos, central Greece, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, following a mass die-off linked to extreme climate fluctuations. The dead freshwater fish filled the bay, 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of Athens. Water levels rose abruptly during a deadly storm last fall that brought extensive flooding in central Greece. However, those waters receded and gave way to the other extreme: drought from low rainfall and successive heat waves over this summer, the Associated Press reported.

The city’s Chamber of Commerce said it was taking legal action to seek damages after commercial activity fell by 80% over the last three days.

FRANKFURT — ‘Sure, the pay could be better, but in terms of job satisfaction, I don’t think we’re that different from Santa Claus … just with babies’: Two storks sit in their nest as the sun rises in Wehrheim near Frankfurt, Germany, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. The majestic birds hold a special place in both German culture and the country’s natural history. German storks are actually long-distance travelers, according to a report on the Ramstein Air Base, an American Air Force base in the Rhineland region. They winter in Africa and return each spring to Europe to breed. The white storks are known for their large nests, which the birds build in elevated spots such as rooftops and even chimneys. The storks reuse their nests from time to time, building them to the point in which the nests themselves become local landmarks.

A stork nest on a building is traditionally viewed as a good omen, as it symbolizes prosperity and fertility.
