BUENOS AIRES — After all the Olympics, the tennis and golf openings, the sexiest competition around is on the dance floor: Maxi Copello and Karu Terenzio from Entre Rios, Argentina, dance during the salon category finals of the World Tango Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024. The tango originated among the people living near the Rio de la Plata, which flows along the Argentina-Uruguay border around the 1880s. The dance, which has African-European roots, was considered a pastime of the poor and working classes and scorned by high society.

Nowadays, aside from stage and screen, there are two types of tango: Argentine, danced in close embrace, and ballroom, which has broader movements. Women customarily wear dresses with flowing mid-calf skirts that swirl. Tango dresses are usually red and black.

INDIA — Reverence and patience for a spiritual leader: Exiled Tibetans wait with ceremonial scarves to welcome their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, before he arrives in Dharamshala, India, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024. He had been in the U.S. for several weeks since undergoing knee-replacement surgery in New York two months ago, according to ABC News. While recovering, he stayed at the Nappi Farmhouse in Syracuse.  The Dalai Lama has made Dharamshala, the hillside town in northern India, his headquarters since fleeing Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. Representatives of a Tibetan government-in-exile also reside there.

Even after relinquishing his political and administrative powers in 2011, the 14th Dalai Lama has remained the Tibetan community’s spiritual leader as a mobilizing force.

RUBELAND — Bats from caves constantly being studied: Bat expert Bernd Ohlendorf examines bats at the Hermannshöhle cave in the central German town of Rubeland (about 136 km south of Hanover, Germany), Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, where an inventory of several hundred bats was recorded. Named after Hermann Grotian, who discovered the cave while surveying and excavations during road construction in 1866, the Hermannshöhle is home not only to bats but, according to legend, a rare “grotto olm” (cave dragon). Other attractions of the Hermannshöhle are the Kristalskammer (crystal chamber) and the 8,000-year-old pillar.

Tours are arranged on a guided-group basis only for safety reasons.

BERLIN — ‘I think we can do business together … ’: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, right, welcomes Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Berlin, Germany, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024. Sir Keir was speaking at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin after the two leaders initiated talks on a new cooperation agreement between the two nations, aiming to boost trade, create jobs and drive economic growth.

However, Starmer pointed out that the new agreement will not reverse Brexit or Great Britain’s exit from the European Union on Jan. 31, 2020. Although Starmer wants Great Britain to have a closer relationship with Europe, there are no plans yet to enable young people in both the E.U. and Britain the right to work in the other.
