BEDFORD-STUYVESANT/BUSHWWICK — The Nuwaubian Nation’s founding location is rumored to be for sale and abandoned, reports the Bushwick Daily. The Nuwaubian Nation is a religious group that formed in Brooklyn in the 1970s, but have since moved to Eatonton, Georgia. The building at 717 Bushwick Avenue, straddling the border of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick, is described as a “windowless, sand-colored compound… affixed with large Egyptian imagery, cartoon-blue window panels and a huge ankh cross.”

Bushwick Daily spoke with someone whose phone number is listed on the “for sale” sign who identified as Tommy Ashley and spoke on behalf of “United Sabaeans Worldwide.” Ashley said his group has been operating a large building called “Sanctuary of the Sabaeans,” and an adjacent building named “All Eyes on Egypt” that is used as a gift shop and bookstore. Ashley told Bushwick Daily that he is acting as an “in between” for the Sabaeans group and prospective buyers. No listings have been placed with local real estate brokers.

According to the Undergraduate Research page of Georgia College and State University, “The Nuwaubian Nation is a religious, black separatist group formed in Brooklyn, New York, in the early 1970s.” Dr. Dwight York led the Nuwaubians through a number of doctrinal changes over the group’s evolution. The group reportedly relocated its headquarters to Eatonton, Georgia, but maintains its Brooklyn presence.
