Young engineer mourned by colleagues after dying in motorcycle crash on BQE

BAY RIDGE — A 24-YEAR-OLD MECHANICAL ENGINEER, called “brilliant” by his colleagues, died Saturday afternoon after colliding with the rear of a dump truck while riding a motorcycle on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Police said they responded at roughly 1:18 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a collision near the Fort Hamilton Parkway pedestrian overpass. An investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that Queens resident Artem Polin was riding a Honda motorcycle in the center lane when he struck the rear of the 2024 Isuzu dump truck. EMS transported Polin to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased. The operator of the dump truck, a 63-year-old man, remained on the scene and was not charged. The investigation remains ongoing.

Polin was an engineer at Live Building Systems, which develops sustainable utility monitoring systems for buildings. “Artem was a brilliant engineer, innovative and a joy to work with,” Live Building’s CEO Dr. Teghpal Sandhu told the Brooklyn Eagle. “Our deepest condolences are extended to his family and friends. We truly lost a great person. He made a tremendous impact in his short time here, and our entire firm is mourning his tragic loss.” Sandhu added, “He believed in us and we believed in him, and he was a special human being.”
