UNITED KINGDOM — PARTY’S OVER: A British study found that even light drinking was associated with an increase in cancer deaths among older adults, and the supposed benefits to the heart of an occasional glass of wine with meals may be due to other factors, The New York Times reported Sunday. The risk was worse among those who had existing health problems or who lived in low-income areas. The study of 135,103 older drinkers was first reported by the JAMA Network, which said that alcohol consumption is responsible for more than 5% of deaths worldwide.

Alcohol probably raises the risk of cancer “from the first drop,” the Times said.
