BOROUGH PARK — AN INNOVATIVE PROCEDURE TO CALM THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND KIDNEYS was launched at Maimonides Medical Center this week.  Maimonides has become the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer the groundbreaking and minimally-invasive renal denervation (RDN) procedure for patients with high blood pressure. Last fall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the procedure, which targets overactive nerves near the kidneys to help control hypertension in conjunction with lifestyle changes and medication.

The landmark procedure, performed under the expert care of Dr. Sergey Ayzenberg, associate director of Interventional Cardiology at Maimonides Health, provides patients with a new option to manage their blood pressure and reduce serious health risks. The Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) system is the first catheter-based approach using radiofrequency energy that complements medications and lifestyle modifications to help reduce blood pressure. The clinically proven procedure, which targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive, involves mild sedation to the patient. The doctor inserts a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney and administers energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney. The tube is removed, leaving no implant behind.

The procedure is approved for use as a complementary treatment in patients with hypertension when lifestyle changes and antihypertensive medications do not adequately control blood pressure.
