CHICAGO — Prelude to a historic address: Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris walks on stage to speak during the Democratic National Convention Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Chicago. Opening her speech with personal testimony about her life, Harris proceeded with the groundwork for helping rebuild the middle class.

“With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans,” Harris said.

CHICAGO — A worldwide phenomenon at all public gatherings: Protesters march during a demonstration outside the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Chicago. The Associated Press reporters described the protests as “largely peaceful with a family-friendly atmosphere,” observing a loudspeaker playing Palestinian dance music at the demonstration, which the Coalition to March on the DNC organized.

During her presidential nomination acceptance speech, Vice President Kamala Harris endeavored to defuse one of the most divisive issues within the Democratic Party on the biggest political stage of her life. However, requests from pro-Palestinian speakers to address the convention had, earlier in the day, been denied.

BANGLADESH — Nature’s revenge — another example of climactic displacement: People displaced by floods rest at a relief shelter in Mohipal, Feni, a coastal district in southeast Bangladesh, Friday, Aug. 23, 2024. Floodwaters have stranded hundreds of thousands of people in India’s northeast and neighboring Bangladesh’s eastern region and have caused at least 15 deaths as rescuers struggled to reach those who needed help, officials and media reports said on Thursday.

India and Bangladesh share 54 common rivers that flow from the Himalayas into the Bay of Bengal to the south. The geography has caused contention over the sharing of waters within the region.

THE BRONX — Part of batting is ducking: New York Yankees’ Gleyber Torres ducks to avoid a pitch thrown by Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams during the fifth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in New York. The Yankees, even with one error, won 6-0 in a shutout that yielded the Guardians only one hit but no runs, according to The Athletic, a feature of The New York Times. The bottom of the fifth inning was particularly dramatic for the Yankees, with Ben Rice scoring, followed by Giancarlo Stanton’s homer to center field and scores from Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. Anthony Volpe scored in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Yankees and the Guardians now each rank first in their American League divisions: East and Central, respectively.

The Brazilian Army is also approaching its bicentennial, having been established in its most modern form on Nov. 1, 1824.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Some work is best done by hand: Trash collectors rappel down Corcovado Mountain to remove garbage dumped on the slope of the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. The statue, which has been voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, stands over the city of Rio. While one of Brazil’s most iconic symbols, its design and construction became an international project involving French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski, Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and French engineer Albert Caquot. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida sculpted the face. The concrete forming the base was supplied from Limhamn, Sweden. Construction lasted from 1922-31.

However, even a statue of Jesus was not immune from lightning strikes, which happened in 2008 and again in 2014, necessitating restoration efforts to repair the damage.

CHICAGO — Entertainment is part of politics and vice versa: The Pack drum line, the official drum line of the Chicago Sky and the Chicago Bulls, performs during the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Chicago. The Pack is internationally acclaimed as well and has performed across the world for national brands such as McDonald’s, Activision, RedBull, Coca-Cola, NASCAR and more.

The Pack, which formed in 2014, made its world debut at Season 17 of America’s Got Talent, according to the group’s web page.

A court in Romania’s capital on Thursday placed the divisive internet influencer Andrew Tate under house arrest for 30 days, as prosecutors investigate a sprawling new case that involves allegations of human trafficking of minors and sex with a minor. The allegations against Tate are separate from the ones that led to his house arrest in Romania last year. After he and his brother Tristan were released, they were warned not to leave Romania.

Andrew Tate has dual American and British citizenship and has allegedly gained both a reputation as a misogynist and an online following.
