Local elected leader makes community cleanups a popular tradition
BENSONHURST/GRAVESEND — COMMUNITY CLEANUPS IN SOUTHERN BROOKLYN HAVE BECOME A TRADEMARK of Assemblymember William Colton’s district. Colton received a wide response in organizing the most recent cleanup on Saturday, Aug. 17, particularly from a contingent of students from Brooklyn Technical High School. The volunteers started at Seth Low Park and then fanned out, concentrating on the stretch of Kings Highway between West Fourth and West 12th streets (in response to a request received on Facebook), and another section as well as Avenue O between West Fourth and West 12th streets.
Also partnering with them were City Councilmember Susan Zhuang, whose district overlaps Colton’s, the Chinese American Social Services Center and auxiliary officers from the 62nd Precinct, who helped supervise the effort. “These cleanups are so important in so many ways,” said Colton. “Not only do they result in more attractive streets and a better quality of life for those living and working in the area, but they teach an important lesson about cooperation and collaboration being at the heart of community, bringing people together in pursuit of a common goal.”
Colton, who has led community cleanups focusing on the area’s bustling business areas for more than a decade, invites volunteers to the next scheduled event on Saturday, Sept. 14. People interested in participating should reach out to Assemblyman Colton’s office, at 718-236-1598, or via email to [email protected].
