Attack on Muslim woman in a Brooklyn Target investigated as hate crime
ATLANTIC TERMINAL — POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING an unprovoked attack on a 34-year-old Muslim woman inside a Target at the Atlantic Terminal Mall in Downtown Brooklyn as a hate crime. On Wednesday, Aug. 21, at about 8:42 p.m., an unidentified man walked up to the woman and punched her multiple times in the face while making anti-Muslim comments. The attacker then fled on foot, traveling westbound on Atlantic Avenue. The victim sustained minor injuries but was not hospitalized, police said. The suspect is described as being 16-20 years old with a heavy build and dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a black mask, a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, white sneakers and carrying a book bag. The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) on Friday condemned the assault.
