Queens man indicted for murdering migrant in Brooklyn park
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — QUEENS RESIDENT Elijah Mitchell, 23, has been indicted for murder as a hate crime and related charges in connection with the shooting death of a Venezuelan immigrant sleeping in a park near the Ryerson Street shelter in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Wednesday. “This defendant allegedly came to the location where the victim was staying, armed with a gun, to settle a score,” Gonzalez said in a release. “This premeditated and coldblooded homicide is outrageous on many levels, not least because the alleged motive was hatred towards new arrivals to our city.” Mitchell was arraigned Wednesday before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun.
Mitchell, a seasonal NYC Parks Department worker, allegedly shot Arturo Jose Rodriguez Marcano, 30, in the chest on July 21 about 10:40 a.m. He was then seen running out of the small park, entering a blue sedan he allegedly owns, and driving away, Rodriguez said.
