CHICAGO — Hundreds of signs call him ‘Coach Walz’: Democratic vice presidential nominee Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz speaks during the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, in Chicago. “It was my students who first inspired me to run for Congress. They saw in me what I hoped to instill in them: a commitment to the common good. An understanding that we’re all in this together. And the belief that a single person can make a real difference for their neighbors.”

So there I was: a 40-something high school teacher with little kids, zero political experience, and no money, running in a deep-red district. But you know what? Never underestimate a public school teacher. Never,” Gov. Walz declared.

Tim Walz, second from right, poses with his wife Gwen Walz, from right, son Gus Walz and daughter Hope Walz, after speaking during the Democratic National Convention Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, in Chicago. Gov. Walz shared his personal story in plain language, emphasizing the values that his family and community shared leading up to when he was elected governor in 2018. “… When we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people that you love,” he said, identifying himself as a veteran, gun owner and hunter.

“But I’m also a dad,” said Walz. “I believe in the Second Amendment. But I also believe our first responsibility is to keep our kids safe.”

NORTH CAROLINA — The perfect fashion accessory if you’re wearing a MAGA hat: A supporter carries a cardboard cutout of Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump after a campaign rally at North Carolina Aviation Museum, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, in Asheboro, NC. Trump spoke at the outdoor public event for the first time since becoming the presumed target of an assassination event in July and was supposed to focus on national security issues. Trump’s allies have urged him to focus on policy instead of personal attacks against Harris as he tries to rebound from facing a new opponent in the campaign.

The event was part of Trump’s weeklong series of counterprogramming to the Democratic National Convention, which concludes Thursday night, Aug. 22, in Chicago.

Wednesday night’s speaker lineup of prominent politicians, celebrities and influentials included Brooklyn’s own Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, representing District 8. Now the House Democratic Leader, Jeffries delivered an energetic address, complete with Biblical references and some zingers directed at GOP nominee Donald Trump, comparing the latter to a toxic ex-boyfriend.

Jeffries also vowed close coordination between House Democrats and the future Harris administration on a slate of the party’s top priorities and is working to return Congress to a Democratic majority.
