BAY RIDGE — THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT is set to spray areas of southern Brooklyn with adult mosquito pesticide next week, following the announcement on Monday of the discovery of four confirmed and five possible cases of West Nile virus in New Yorkers, the first so far this year. One of the potential cases, discovered via blood donation, is a Brooklyn resident, Gothamist reported. Starting at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and continuing until 6 a.m. on Thursday morning, Health Department workers will spray low concentrations of the pesticides Anvil 10+10, Duet or MERUS 3 from Bay Ridge to Coney Island, in an area roughly bounded by Third Avenue to the west, 65th Street to the north, Ocean Parkway to the west, and the waterfront to the south. Residents and pets are advised to stay inside and close windows during the pesticide application, and to make sure to clean skin, clothing and food exposed to it afterwards.

City data shows higher levels of West Nile detected in sampled mosquitoes this year than last year. New Yorkers are asked to help reduce mosquito populations by draining any sources of standing water, and to consult a doctor if experiencing any West Nile symptoms, like fever, head and body aches or rashes.
