CHICAGO — General news analysis seemed to place Michelle’s speech as most impactful: Former first lady Michelle Obama speaks during the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, in Chicago, where her husband began his political career, first as a community organizer and later state senator, U.S. Representative and then Senator. The Obamas also got married in Chicago. During her 20-minute address, Mrs. Obama declared, “America, hope is making a comeback.” Later in her speech, she said, “No one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American. No one.”
Mrs. Obama shifted the focus to her husband, former President Barack Obama as she introduced him as the keynote speaker. Echoing her statement of hope, Mr. Obama said, “… I’m feeling fired up. I am feeling ready to go even if I am the only person stupid enough to speak after Michelle Obama.”

However, the Staten Island team had advanced earlier in the series after beating the Midwest and the Great Lakes regional teams last weekend.
The 38-game Little League’s World Series, which began Aug. 14 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 25, has American and international divisions, with China and Japan among those competing in the latter.

The 2024 Copa Libertadores final stages are being played from Aug. 13 to Nov. 30, 2024. A total of 16 teams compete in the final stages to decide the champions of the 2024 Copa Libertadores. Buenos Aires, Argentina, is hosting the final game.
VATICAN — Nice hat, but don’t mess with the traditional beanie: Pope Francis wears a traditional hat that was given to him during a meeting with Indonesian faithful on the occasion of the weekly general audience at the Vatican, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. The pontiff, who will be traveling to Indonesia in two weeks, devoted extensive time with a group who traveled from the Asian archipelago nation to greet him, reports Rome Reports, a website on Vatican doings. The group at the Vatican consisted of interfaith leaders from the Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu traditions. Each member was excited about the Pope’s first visit to their home country.
Stefanus Gusma, chairman of Catholic Youth Organization Indonesia, said, “The Pope’s views, thoughts and values related to humanity, brotherhood and the environment have become a necessity, an interest and a commitment for all of us. So we are very proud that Indonesia is one of the countries chosen by the Pope.”

Each year, on this day, Hungarians commemorate the foundation of their state and its founder, King St. Stephen. The St. Stephen’s Cathedral is seen in the foreground. Hungary’s first king remained committed to his Christian faith and had to fight a brother whose pagan leanings made him believe that he, instead, was the rightful monarch. After a bloody fight, Stephen prevailed and was crowned right at the start of the second millennium, either Dec. 25, 1000, or Jan. 1, 1001, depending on the source. He was canonized in 1083, near the start of the second millennium C.E.
Hungary has another saint born about two centuries later, St. Elisabeth. Born into royalty, she was married at age 14 and widowed by 20. She used her dowry money to establish hospitals and tend to the sick. Elisabeth was canonized in 1235.

GAZA STRIP — Beaten beyond the point of shanty town — Gazans are left with little more than a tent city: Tents are crammed together as displaced Palestinians camp on the beach, west of Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. Tensions on Wednesday in central Gaza intensified after Israeli military vehicles suddenly advanced toward the al-Qarara Port area, west of Khan Younis, reports Reuters, Al Jazeera and other news sources. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, President Biden and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conferred by phone about ways to advance a potential Gaza ceasefire and hostages deal, the White House said, later adding that Vice President Kamala Harris was also on the call.
Israel’s opposition leaders and many in the news media believe that Netanyahu is trying to undermine the peace talks. Talks with Secretary of State Antony Blinken ended without any agreement between Israel and Hamas militants on a truce in the Palestinian enclave.

The winners of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana will earn the right to play against the winners of the 2024 Copa Libertadores in the 2025 Recopa Sudamericana. They will also automatically qualify for the 2025 Copa Libertadores group stage.
ST. ITALY — Nature’s revenge — grim cleanup after violent storm: Italian firefighter scuba divers bring ashore, in the green bag, the body of one of the victims from the British-flagged vessel Bayesian, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. The yacht was hit by a violent, sudden storm, which is believed to have produced a waterspout (tornado over water) and sank early Monday while at anchor off the Sicilian village of Porticello near Palermo, in southern Italy.
Among the missing passengers is believed to be British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, reports the Associated Press.
The Bayesian was carrying 10 crew members and 12 passengers. Fifteen of those on board did survive. The six missing people are believed to have been trapped in the sailboat’s hull. Rescuers are searching the wreckage as of press time Wednesday.
