BUDAPEST — Nothing is more romantic than fireworks cascading over an old European city: Fireworks explode as part of the celebrations of the national holiday in Budapest, Hungary, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. Each year, on this day, Hungarians commemorate the foundation of their state and its founder, King St. Stephen. The St. Stephen’s Cathedral is seen in the foreground. Hungary’s first king remained committed to his Christian faith and had to fight a brother whose pagan leanings made him believe that he, instead, was the rightful monarch. After a bloody fight, Stephen prevailed and was crowned right at the start of the second millennium, either Dec. 25, 1000, or Jan. 1, 1001, depending on the source. He was canonized in 1083, near the start of the second millennium C.E.
Hungary has another saint born about two centuries later, St. Elisabeth. Born into royalty, she was married at age 14 and widowed by 20. She used her dowry money to establish hospitals and tend to the sick. Elisabeth was canonized in 1235.
