Teen killed in e-bike crash

KENSINGTON — A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy, identified as Juared Umedjon, was killed on Monday afternoon in Kensington when his e-bike fell into the side of a turning truck, reports Gothamist. Two other teens, who had been also riding the bike that Umedjon was driving, were injured in the collision. Police said the accident happened after the truck’s driver made a right-hand turn from Ditmas Avenue onto Coney Island Avenue. Umedjon attempted to pass it, but lost control of the bike, sending the group into and underneath the truck.

Umedjon is the twelfth minor to be killed in a traffic accident in the city so far in 2024, an increase from previous years. Advocacy group Transportation Alternatives told Gothamist that the intersection of Coney Island and Ditmas avenues is “notorious” for lacking a protected bike lane.
