Lewis-Martin advises women to carry whistle, pepper spray

CITY HALL — ‘YOU CAN BLOW A WHISTLE,’ Ingrid Lewis-Martin, Chief Advisor to NYC Mayor Adams, said at the regular City Hall Tuesday press conference when the mayor was asked how women can protect themselves from random, unprovoked attacks. While the mayor himself was short of concrete advice, Lewis-Martin jumped in. “You can blow a whistle. You can get pepper spray. I believe pepper spray is legal. You can use pepper spray to try to defend yourself,” she advised.

“And mayor, remember in Borough Hall and in the senate also, we made handouts that we gave to women in different communities, telling them different safety tips. And we also had a team of martial artists that gave free courses. So maybe we can reinstitute that,” Lewis-Martin added.
