Vote tally begins for Coney Island NYCHA residents in choosing future of their homes

CONEY ISLAND — THE RESIDENTS OF TWO DEVELOPMENTS IN CONEY ISLANDS have concluded their voting for the future direction of their homes. Voting concluded on Friday, Aug. 16, for both Coney Island Houses and Coney Island I (Site 1B), also known as Unity Towers, Separate, simultaneous votes were held at the two Brooklyn developments, and residents were able to choose between three ballot options: joining the New York City Public Housing Preservation Trust or the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program, or remaining Section 9, which began as part of the 1937 US Housing, Act which established public housing as a federal program to for low-income families and the elderly but is limited in that NYCHA is barred from drawing on other funding sources. An independent, third-party election administrator has started tallying the votes, with final results expected on Friday, Aug. 23.

The Public Housing Preservation Trust option was put forth during the pandemic as part of NYCHA’s Blueprint for Change strategy starting in 2019.
