Liakas Law, P.C., a New York City-based, family-run litigation, and personal injury practice, is offering its summer internship program to even more eager students looking to embark upon law as a career of choice.

While this year, Liakas is accommodating five interns, as compared to two in years past, it plans to significantly expand on that number in spring 2025, as the firm has recently reached out to even more schools, including New York Law School, Colgate University, and Brooklyn Law School.

The real deal

Hon. Mark Partnow, a retired State Supreme Court justice and senior partner at the Liakas Firm, told the Brooklyn Eagle that the internships and experiences offered at Liakas are indeed the real deal.

“[It’s] newbies working with old-timers, showing what the trenches look like, and demonstrating how a first-class firm like Liakas contributes to the good of the profession and teaches what strong advocacy for our clients looks like,” Partnow said.

“If you accept the axiom, as I do, that our children are our future, then it’s no stretch to believe that our next generation of lawyers, including law students and even those just contemplating a career in law, are the future of this wonderful profession.”

According to Partnow, what makes Liakas Law unique among successful law firms is that at the end of the day, they are a family business — “and nobody sets the standard for success and excellence like family,” he said. “We at Liakas have a Liakas involved at every step of every case.”

Partnow pointed out that every intern and attorney is nurtured in their career the same because every lawyer at Liakas strives to be the best in the business.

Thinking outside the box

“Our success is measured by how we ethically right the wrongs that have occurred to our clients,” he explained. “The little guys and gals injured and hurt — their lives upended too often — always get the strong advocacy they deserve at Liakas. Our motto is ‘Justice for All.’”

Partnow noted that many firms take on simple cases where a defendant’s liability is clear, such as “the piano fell out of your window; it looks like you have liability.”

“But in the real world, it’s usually not that simple,” he said. “We at Liakas Law fight for the more nuanced cases where we have to think outside the box. That’s why it’s so helpful for our interns to participate in strategy sessions wherein our team strategizes and debates legal strategies and legal arguments with our most senior firm members as to how to best serve our clients.”

Among other things, intern responsibilities also include joining attorneys in court, sitting in on depositions, motions, discovery responses, legal research, and more.

“The underdog is top dog in our practice,” Partnow said, adding that the firm’s mission to help the injured serves as an inspiration to their interns, as they are brought right into the arena to learn up-close how a firm strategizes and succeeds for the benefit of their clients.

“Whether our interns eventually become attorneys with Liakas or work elsewhere, they will always remember the high bar for advocacy and excellence they learned while under our tutelage,” Partnow said.
