The Kings County Criminal Bar Association (KCCBA) held its annual charity golf outing on Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Marine Park Golf Course, marking another successful year for the event that has become a staple in the local legal community.
Established in 2017, the golf outing has not only served as a stress-relief event for members of the criminal justice system but has also raised significant funds for various charitable organizations and the association’s scholarship program.
This year’s event, organized by longtime contributor Paul Hirsch, brought together judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, court employees and other legal professionals for a day of camaraderie and philanthropy. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 in previous years, the KCCBA has maintained the tradition, reinforcing the event’s importance to both the association and the broader community.
KCCBA President Darran Winslow, now in his second year of a two-year term, emphasized the value of the outing for the association’s members. “This event is crucial for our members to reduce the stress that comes with our intense jobs. It’s also a great way to bring the community together while raising money for causes that matter to us,” Winslow said.
The funds raised from the golf outing in the past have gone to support several local charities, including the YWCA of Brooklyn, Families Rising (a program of New York Foundling) and the Elementary School Sports League. The event also helps to fund the KCCBA’s annual scholarship, awarded to a Brooklyn Law School student. This year’s outing continued the tradition of giving back to the community and supporting programs that provide critical services to those in need.
Families Rising, a charity founded by Judge Michael Corriero, has been particularly close to the heart of past KCCBA President Michael Cibella, who initiated the golf outing during his tenure. The organization works with juvenile defendants to provide them with the support they need to avoid future involvement in the criminal justice system.
After a day on the greens, participants gathered for a reception where prizes were awarded, and stories were shared over food and drinks.
As the event continues to grow in popularity and impact, the KCCBA remains committed to using the outing as a means of doing good for the local community. The association’s efforts have solidified its reputation as one of the leading legal associations in the area, known not only for its professional excellence but also for its dedication to charitable causes.
