State approves substantial National Grid rate hikes for millions of NYC customers
BROOKLYN/QUEENS — THE NYS PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION on Thursday approved three-year gas rate hikes for customers of KeySpan Gas East Corp. and Brooklyn Union Gas Co., both subsidiaries of National Grid. For a typical residential heating customer, the hikes equal increases of 19.4% effective Sept. 1, 2024, 5.1% effective April 1, 2025, and 11.1% effective April 1, 2026. The increase is 37% less than National Grid asked for, and the agreement includes customer service and energy efficiency mandates, the Commission said in a release.
Community organizations including Sane Energy Project, 350 Brooklyn and Alliance For A Green Economy rallied outside of National Grid’s Downtown Brooklyn headquarters on Wednesday to call on the PSC and Gov. Kathy Hochul to reject the hike, and to highlight the plan’s environmental, economic, and public health impacts.
