Bushwick man gets 25 years for Bed-Stuy shooting
BED-STUY — Brooklyn D.A. Eric Gonzalez on Thursday announced that Bushwick resident Darrien Weekes, 26, was sentenced to 25 years for the fatal 2019 shooting of Malik Russell, 29, during a confrontation on a Bed-Stuy residential street. Weekes pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. According to the evidence, Russell was alone on the early morning of June 1, 2019, when he encountered Weekes and an acquaintance on Chauncey Street, initially shaking hands and starting a discussion with the two. The D.A. said that as the three men were talking, the defendant suddenly took out a gun and fired three times at the victim, striking him once, before snatching the victim’s hat and leaving him lying on the sidewalk.
The shooting itself was captured on video surveillance, while the defendant was also captured approaching and leaving the scene. The acquaintance, Oliver Kinard, 27, pleaded guilty to third-degree hindering prosecution and was sentenced to a conditional discharge.
