CITYWIDE — WCBS NEWSRADIO 880 will be signing off for good in less than two weeks, ending almost 60 years of broadcasting news in New York City, the station’s owner Audacy announced Monday. The 880 AM spot will shift to sports radio and relaunch as ESPN New York and WHSQ-AM effective Aug. 26. Audacy also owns 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM, which will remain broadcasting as the last all-news station in the city. Fair Media Council’s Jackie Clement called the loss a wake-up call, describing WCBS-AM as one of the best radio news stations in history. “Legends like Charles Osgood, Charles Kuralt and Pat Summerall walked its halls, supported by countless producers, editors and reporters who helped make those names household staples,” she wrote in the organization’s Wednesday newsletter. “This isn’t about quality, which is why it stings so much.”

Clement issued a warning about the nationwide loss of trusted news radio. “When disaster strikes, radio becomes a lifeline… What happens when an internet and power outage silences all alerts?”
