PARK SLOPE — THE 17TH ANNUAL South Slope Derby is set for next weekend: more than 100 kids will pit their handmade, self-designed soap box carts against one another in a colorful race down 17th Street in Park Slope, where a panel of local judges will evaluate the kids’ creations on creativity, design and engineering, and, of course, raw speed. The Derby is a capstone project for arts program KoKo NYC’s summer workshops. Artists and counselors teach kids how to construct features like steering systems and brakes and help them test out prototypes in advance of the big day, while also encouraging creativity in design.

The Derby will start at noon on Saturday, Aug. 24, on 17th Street between 5th and 6th avenues. There will also be raffles, food and other activities at the event for the public.
