Coney Island sandcastle competition this weekend

CONEY ISLAND — THE ANNUAL CONEY Island Sand Sculpting Competition is back for its 32nd year on the beach this weekend, offering prizes of up to $500 for the best original sand creations. Sponsored by the Alliance for Coney Island, the event is open to the public to view or to join in, although competition is always fierce; prospective sculptors can enter in the individual, group or family categories.

Entrants can pre-register online or can sign up at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The competition will take place near the boardwalk at West 12th Street starting at noon, with winners announced at 4 p.m.
