BOERUM HILL — NYC DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION deployed crews to open fire hydrants and flush out the water system in Boerum Hill on Wednesday after numerous complaints about brown water came in from residents living on Pacific, Dean, Wyckoff, Bergen, Hoyt, Nevins and State streets and Boerum Place, among others. According to Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon’s office, which inquired into the issue, DEP said the discolored water is not dangerous, but is not recommended for drinking, bathing, cooking, cleaning or washing clothes and dishes. Simon’s office advises people with discolored water to call 311 or file a report so they can tend to a specific area, as the office is hearing that some blocks “are fine while the next block is not.” In addition, DEP encourages those living in larger buildings with discolored water to contact their building manager to flush out the water tower.

More information about brown water can be found on the city’s drinking water FAQ page.
