NY’s Labor Department releases guidelines during National Safe + Sound Week
STATEWIDE — NEW YORK’S VERSION OF NATIONAL SAFE + SOUND WEEK, which runs Aug. 12-18, aims to protect the health and safety of outdoor workers, particularly during extreme heat. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday launched National Safe + Sound Week by highlighting New York’s State’s initiatives and programs to ensure the health and safety of workers across the state, including newly developed guidelines from the State Department of Labor, directing New York’s employers to keep outdoor workers safe from extreme heat. Several webinars will also be presented, on Tuesdays, Aug.13 and 27, with the Board’s Advocate for Injured Workers hosting the monthly Workers’ Comp 101 and 202 webinars, respectively, to help workers understand their rights under the Workers’ Compensation Law and how to file a claim for benefits.
As part of the observance, the New York State Thruway Authority, New York State Department of Transportation (DOT), State Police and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee are collaborating on several major initiatives to keep workers safe on New York’s roads and bridges, including the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, the expanded Move Over Law and Operation Hard Hat, all to slow motorists down in work zones by using radar to identify vehicles traveling over the speed limit.
Extreme heat affects workers and employer businesses alike, through increased Workers Comp claims, sick time and decreased productivity.
