Crown Heights wellness guru wins eviction stay in alleged deed theft case
CROWN HEIGHTS – HOLISTIC HEALING GURU Helen “Queen Afua” Robinson won a victory in court last week, reports Black Star News, securing a stay of eviction in the fight to save her Park Place family townhouse from an alleged case of deed theft. Kings County Surrogate Court judge Bernard Graham ruled that a July eviction warrant that allowed putative landlord Menachem Gurevitch to change the house’s locks had been improper due to ongoing legislation by the family against Gurevitch, as well as complications with an application for rental assistance funding. Robinson and her daughter, Sherease Torain, have been battling Gurevitch over possession of the townhouse in court since 2015, when Gurevitch claimed Robinson’s mother Ida sold him the building for just $800,000. The family says that Ida was tricked and believed Gurevitch was helping her refinance the home, which was purchased by Robinson’s grandmother in 1951.
Robinson and Torain allege that Gurevitch and others are part of a deed theft ring that targets minority homeowners. The court noted that one of the accused had been indicted in Queens in 2017 for deed theft and that the Brooklyn D.A. had opened a criminal investigation into Robinson’s case.
