Proposal would add protected bike lanes, pedestrian islands to dangerous Crown Heights blocks
CROWN HEIGHTS — THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is considering a proposal to transform dangerous blocks on the border of Crown Heights and East Flatbush known for speeding vehicles and crashes, THE CITY reports. The plan includes creating protected bike lanes that would narrow the roadways, as well as curb extensions and pedestrian islands. THE CITY describes the location as “a school-saturated area of central Brooklyn where drag racing is common.” During an informal video conference call arranged by Brooklyn’s Community Board 9’s transportation committee, locals aired concerns over safety, congestion and parking.
Some opposed to the new bike lanes worry that narrowing the streets could lead to even more congestion, and proposed speed limit reductions and speed bumps instead.
