South Korea’s Shin Jung-whi competes in the men’s 10m platform diving preliminary at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, in Saint-Denis, France. The splash that divers make at entry (contact with water) also factors into the athlete’s score, with a minimal splash being ideal. When entering head-first, the diver’s arms should be stretched above the head, in line with the body, explains the Paris 2024 Olympic website.
Olympic diving uses only the 10-meter (ca. 9-feet high) platform and the 3-meter springboard, even though many viewers have spotted the presence of diving apparatuses at several different heights. The diving well (pool) must be at least 16 feet deep.

KATHMANDU — Dressed for an international celebration: Nepal’s indigenous women in traditional attire gather to participate in a rally to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People in Kathmandu, Nepal, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024 focuses on “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact,” according to a United Nations webpage. Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact are the best protectors of the forest. Yet, their needs are repeatedly deprioritized in the demand for minerals, water, tourism and other resources in developed and developing nations. Rather, Indigenous peoples are closely dependent on their ecological environments, and changes to their natural habitat endanger both the survival of individual members and the group as a whole.
Living in their own communities, Indigenous people often “belong to the land,” a concept often foreign in societies where individuals and organizations seek property rights.
