Health Dept to spray for mosquitoes
BROOKLYN — THE CITY HEALTH Department plans to spray adult mosquito insecticide across a broad stretch of central and southern Brooklyn next week, following a report of the state’s first case of West Nile virus this year in Suffolk County on Thursday. Mosquitoes carrying the virus were discovered in all five boroughs last month. On Monday, Aug. 12, trucks will spray across neighborhoods surrounding Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery, in an area roughly bounded by Atlantic Ave. to the north, 4th Avenue to the west, 52nd Street to the south and Rogers Ave. to the east; and on Wednesday, Aug. 14, trucks will spray in coastal neighborhoods between Sheepshead Bay and the Gateway Center, in an area roughly bounded by Kings Highway to the north, Ocean Parkway to the west, the Belt Parkway to the south and Hendrix Creek to the east.
The city advises that while the insecticides it uses — Anvil 10+10, Duet or MERUS 3 — are generally safe, people and pets should remain indoors during the spraying and wash skin, hair, food or clothing that comes in contact with the spray; health officials also urge any vulnerable New Yorkers experiencing West Nile symptoms like fever or aches to seek medical attention, and for all New Yorkers to help reduce mosquito populations by draining any standing water.
